Materials Engineering and Testing

GCE operates two full-service laboratory offices in Caledon and Ottawa, supported by six mobile labs: four dedicated to asphalt, soils, and aggregates, and two specialized for concrete. Quality testing, on-site or in-facility.

Overview

Meeting our clients where they are with mobile laboratories for quality testing

From mix design and material verification through specialized compliance testing, GCE's labs cover the full range of construction materials. We handle asphalt performance testing, design and compliance, pavement recycling, soils and aggregate analysis, and advanced concrete testing. For projects in nuclear and rail sectors, we deliver compliance oversight and trackwork testing to the rigorous standards those industries demand.

What Each Service Entails

With full-service labs in Caledon and Ottawa and six specialized mobile units, GCE delivers material testing directly to your site or within controlled facilities, wherever your project requires it.

Our testing goes beyond standard volumetrics. Dynamic Modulus, SCB, DCT, 4-Point Bending, and Hamburg Wheel Track Testing produce data that confirms every mix is built for your project's specific traffic loads and conditions.

GCE provides Marshall and Superpave HMA design and verification. Holding CCIL Type A, B, and E certifications, we ensure every mix meets the quality and regulatory standards your project requires.

Our team specializes in pavement recycling mix designs, supported by a full-scale performance laboratory. We evaluate asphalt durability through advanced performance testing to extend pavement service life and reduce long-term material costs.

GCE delivers soils and aggregate assessments, including CCIL Type C testing. Our Type D petrographic analysis examines the physical and chemical properties of rock and aggregates to confirm the suitability of the material.

GCE holds CCIL Type QRS certification for concrete mix design. Our capabilities include Rapid Chloride Permeability (RCP), air voids, mortar bar expansion, and shotcrete flexural toughness testing.

GCE is currently delivering major contracts for nuclear power plant projects, providing concrete testing, material inspection, and compliance oversight under CSA N299 quality assurance standards.

GCE provides specialized testing services for rail track infrastructure. Our team delivers precision testing for critical trackwork components, ensuring rail systems meet the safety and performance standards required for modern transit operations.
